Visiting “Uncle Alan” for me was always a balm for the soul. His wit was so dry you’d need a beer to remain hydrated and his constant stream of nuggets of wisdom were always welcomed. One of the last times I saw Alan, and not being certain I would see him again, I was determined to let him know that I loved him. So after giving Clare a hug goodbye, I also gave Alan a hug goodbye. It was clearly a new experience for him, at least with someone outside the immediate family, and while it was a little like hugging a telegraph pole, I’m sure the message was conveyed. Yes, I loved that wonderful man very very much. Thank you Uncle Alan, for being the wonderful uncle that you were.
