Dear Alison and family
It was with sadness that we read of Alans passing. Bill particularly enjoyed teaching with Alan at Makoura College a few years ago. We are thinking of you and the wider family particularly Amanda, Ella-Grace and Brighton who I remember with fondness.

Lost but never forgotten by the blokes at Masterton Henley Mens Shed, from sharing tales of the days at GM, to motorbikes and his passion for engineering, we enjoyed Alan's company so much. Rest now Mens Shedder.

Hi Alison.

I can't begin to understand what you are going through right now, please know that Miles and I are thinking of you. Alan was my father in law, but more than that he was a great friend to me. Although we did not have a lot in common, we managed to get along just fine. That's because he was such a lovely person, he was always willing to see how I was going and he was genuinely interested. You and Alan made me feel like I was part of the family straight away and I really appreciated that.

I'll always remember the good times I had with Alan, helping out on the farm or in the shed, talking about the motor cycling adventures he had been on, and drinking a beer or 5 after a day of spending time with the grandkids.

Alan showed me how I could be great father simply by spending time with my kids and being kind and patient with them. He was, and will continue to be, a great example of how to be an awesome dad.

Grumpy was a great grandfather. He made me feel happy and safe around him. I will remember the good times we had together, teaching me how to cut pieces of wood into pieces, how to look after the animals on the farm and I'll miss him a lot.

Please know that Miles and I will always be here for you.

I only met Alan a few times, but I always found him warm and approachable. I especially cherish the time I spent at Alan and Alison's home just outside of Masterton. Alan and Alison were wonderful hosts, they took me on a tour of their farmlet, let me feed some animals, and their jug was always on for a warm cuppa and a good yarn. It was such a shock and I am so saddened to hear of Alan's passing, particularly for his family at these saddest of times. My heart goes out to the entire Sutherland Clan xxx. I hope one day soon we can all come together and pay our respects for this great man.
