Chapter 2 The Early Years

My mother's story begins with the cry of a life in the year 1933. That would make her a Rooster in the Chinese Zodiac. However, she always claimed that she was a Sheep in the Chinese zodiac year. That means she was born in the year 1931. She was actually 87 years the year she left us and if you add 3 years to her age, traditionally and culturally, it is natural to add 3 years for good omens for the chinese believing in Taoism. That would make her 90 years old.
She was born to peasants, Grandfather Tan and Grandmother Lim, living in Chinese Settlement during the British rule that later moved to the new village after the war. Cont
She did go to school to study Chinese but when the Japanese army's evasion finally reached Labis. She needed to stop schooling and fled hiding in the nearby jungle with the family.
She remembered that before fleeing, Grandfather Tan put valuables in tin and hid in the pond that they rear fish next to their wooden house to be retrieved after the war. I was told Grandfather Tan never found the hidden tin even after the pond was drained. I always joked with her that someone must have seen it, he retrieved it when everyone was busy running. Jack pot.
The war changed everyone's life. It was like starting all over again for many. It was tough to earn a living. That was when she stopped schooling and helped around chorus and takings care of younger siblings.
Her eldest sister, a year older than her, was her closest friend in need. I was told that eldest aunty would run around as far Johor Baru in train to sell food and grocery to put end needs on the table. She said she preferred to stay at home to do the housework. Well a good arrangement for both sisters and they stayed close like best friends forever.
My mother was a selfless person and would help around-the-clock to her best capacity.
